Response to Jayalaitha’s appeal in various South Indian news papers Re: Mullaperiyar; from an Indian Citizen who cares about the valuable lives of all human beings in this world.

Jayalaitha ,
[ I do not want to address you ‘ Dear’ , as you were describing in your ‘appeal ‘ that people in Kerala have Psychosis . I am sure that you do not have sufficient education or intellectual capacity to understand the meaning of that word. I can explain the meaning of that word for you. Psychosis is a severely impaired state of mental functioning manifested by delusions [fixed false beliefs] and hallucinations [ hearing voices and seeing non existing things] . It is also described as the presentation of a very severe mental illness- Schizophrenia. Reading your appeal I seriously suspect that you are suffering from this. You have labelled all the people living in Kerala ‘Schizophrenics ‘and hence I don’t want to use any respectable words to address you]
Your descriptions about masonry gravity dams are being safe and resistant to natural calamities, giving examples of couple of dams standing in America and Britain is “insane” because; you as a chief minister should understand two major masonry gravity dam collapses in your nearby states . If you are not aware of this please ask Madras IIT which is very near to the place you live. They have conducted studies on this and I am attaching couple of incidents of dam failures from their report.

READ IT HERE
First one is a dam as old as Mullaperiyar which collapsed in 1961.
Khadakwasla Dam (Mutha, Maharashtra, India, 1864 – 1961)

The Khadkawasla Dam, near Pune in Maharashtra, India was constructed in 1879 as a masonry gravity dam, founded on hard rock. It had a height of 31.25 m above the river bed, with a 8.37 m depth of foundation. Its crest length was 1.471 m and had a free board of 2.74 m. The dam had a flood capacity of 2,775 m3/s and a reservoir of 2.78 * 103 m3. The failure of the dam occurred because of the breach that developed inPanshet Dam, upstream of the Khadkawasla reservoir. The upstream dam released a tremendous volume of water into the downstream reservoir at a time when the Khadkawasla reservoir was already full, with the gates discharging at near full capacity. This caused overtopping of the dam because inflow was much above the design flood. The entire length of the dam spilling 2.7 m of water. Vibration of the structure was reported, as the incoming flood was battering the dam. Failure occurred within four hours of the visiting flood waters.

Don’t you understand that one severe monsoon in Western Ghats could cause a flood like this ,which could result the collapse of the already weakened Mullaperiyaar dam . If your theory of gravity dams being un-collapsible how do you explain the collapse of 100 year old Khadakwasla Dam

Another example of similar incidence happened in your nearby state is given below.
Kaddam Project Dam, Andhra Pradesh, India

Built in Adilabad, Andhra in 1957 – 58, the dam was a composite structure, earth fill and/or rock fill and gravity dam. It was 30.78 m high and 3.28 m wide at its crest. The storage at full was 1.366 * 108 m3. The observed floods were 1.47 * 104 m3/s. The dam was overtopped by 46 cm of water above the crest, in spite of a free board allowance of 2.4 m that was provided, causing a major breach of 137.2 m wide that occurred on the left bank. Two more breaches developed on the right section of the dam. The dam failed in August 1958.

You proudly explained about the work done by your engineers, to strengthen Mullaperiyar dam with modern technology . When your Tamil Nadu engineers applied their modern technology to Kodaganar Dam in Tamil Nadu, the result was as shown below. If your technology did not prevent such a small dam collapsing in your on state in a small earthquake ,how do you make sure that the same technology will save 125 year old huge structure in Mullaperiyar ?

Kodaganar Dam, Tamil Nadu, India
This dam in the India, was constructed in 1977 on a tributary of Cauvery River as an earthen dam with regulators, with five vertical lift shutters each 3.05 m wide. The dam was 15.75 m high above the deepest foundation, having a 11.45 m of height above the river bed. The storage at full reservoir level was 12.3 million m3, while the flood capacity was 1275 m3/s. A 2.5 m free board above the maximum water level was provided. The dam failed due to overtopping by flood waters which flowed over the downstream slopes of the embankment and breached the dam along various reaches. There was an earthquake registered during the period of failure although the foundation was strong. The shutters were promptly operated during flood, but the staff could only partially lift the shutters, because of failure of power. Although a stand-by generator set was commissioned soon, this could not help and they resorted to manual operation of shutters,. In spite of all efforts water eventually overtopped the embankment. Water gushed over the rear slopes as a cascade of water was eroding the slopes. Breaches of length 20 m to 200 m were observed. It appeared as if the entire dam was overtopped and breached.

With the examples you have given internationally , you have proven the ignorance you have in this subject. I can help you there too Theodor Roosevelt dam was not a gravity dam and the work you are mentioning was not a modification, it was a reconstruction of the dam. It was completed in 1996 at a cost of $430 million. The $430 million in costs included three other major construction contracts associated with the dam.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt_Dam.

As a result of the reconstruction, the dam has a completely altered appearance from when it was originally listed as a National Historic Landmark.

For the safety of people in Kerala and some parts of Tamil Nadu, why don’t you understand that this is what exactly we are demanding for .
Did you also know that The Upper Glendevon dam mentioned in your ‘appeal’ was made of concrete as a gravity dam and major concerns were existing from the beginning about the leaks and its ability to withstand earthquakes. Completed in 1955, the reservoir is retained by a concrete gravity dam, some 46m (150 feet) high. The dam has suffered from significant water-leakage problems which required restorative action in 1960, 1968 and again in 1975. In early 1990s a major reconstruction work was undertaken spending millions of pounds to make that dam safe enough by reconstruction? Again we are demanding for a similar kind of approach by reconstructing Mullaperiyar dam .
In your appeal , contradicting your earlier statements , you admit that the worst may happen –the Mullaperiyar dam may collapse. You also argue that Idukki dam will hold the water. What about the lives of 500,000 people living in between ?
Did you know that in 1975 Chinese government convinced the people with similar kind of argument that if Shimonten dam fails Banqiavo dam will hold the water and on the day when the first one collapsed both dams failed resulting in 250,000 deaths , loss of 500,000 buildings and permanent damage to 1000,000 people?
May I ask you few questions ?
1.Do you or your engineers have any idea about the actual amount of the water in Mullaperiyar reservoir ?
2. Is the Peak Dam Failure index calculated for this 125 year old dam calculated and if so what is it. That means ,If a heavy monsoon comes the pressure between incoming water and the out flow needed to be balanced and the increasing height of the dam will make it more prone to collapse . If you knew this , will you suggest this knowing that it will result in the death of 50 lakhs malayalees and 5 lachs Tamilians ?
Finally you said there is no valid reason to believe that Mullaperiyar dam is unsafe.
I would like to attract your attention to this
http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/kerala/article2694645.ece?css=print
The report published by the same news papers in which your appeal came says
“ The scanning of upstream side of the Mullaperiyar dam using a remote operated vehicle by the Central Soil and Materials Research Station on directions from the Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court had found serious damage to the masonry structure between 95 to 106 feet from the base of the dam, retired engineer M. Sasidharan who was observer of Kerala during the scanning said in a report to the government.
Apart from innumerable pot holes, crevices and other openings that were visible on the surface of the dam, the masonry cover provided at the upstream side of the dam was seen to have undergone a crushing between 106 feet and 95 feet throughout the entire length of the dam.
“The damage that the dam has undergone in between the above noted elevations is so severe that no amount of rectification can salvage the dam from a disaster. Even a medium nature of earth quake of four to five magnitudes (on the Richter scale) near the dam site can shake the already loosened masonry cover to a collapsible condition.”
The scan results projected deterioration at all 34 sections of the dam from massive erosion of lime surki mortar from the rubble joints; exposing huge voids, deep pot holes, wide open joints, deep crevices and hollowness on the upstream periphery of the dam. “On most of the sections at this area, rubble was seen in a loosened condition, suggesting that the dam has undergone an irreparable damage.” Mr. Sasidharan said that some of the damage was caused by mistakes in the strengthening works carried out by Tamil Nadu following recommendation of the Central Water Commission in 1979.
The dam had undergone a crushing on account of the additional load of nearly 21.75 tons per feet applied on the top of the dam in the form of RCC capping as part of emergency strengthening measure. The pre-stressing done by cable anchoring through the upstream masonry portion might have loosened and damaged the masonry. Mr. Sasidharan told The Hindu that when the original case over raising of water level was argued before the Supreme Court, Kerala had failed to present the argument that the dam was structurally weak.
What it had presented was applicable to many other dams. In court records, the Mullaperiyar dam was stated as a masonry dam whereas it was a composite dam. The inner core (62 per cent) of the dam was constructed with hydraulic lime surki mix and its upstream and downstream sides with rubble masonry.
He said that no present day engineer would dare even in his dream to design and construct a dam using hydraulic lime surki mix, in the manner of Mullperiyar dam, as this hydraulic lime surki mix is a very weak and unsound material, especially to withstand earthquake forces and high water pressure when compared to dams constructed with rubble or concrete materials.
This was the reason why no country in the world venture to construct a dam using hydraulic lime surki mixes, even though the material is available in plenty.’’
3. Are you prepared to bring an independent international dam safety agency [From Britain or America] to study the safety of this dam and reassure the people of Kerala and the border districts of Tamil Nadu ?
Now I request you to seriously re-consider your arguments and save the lives of 50 lakh people in Kerala . We are not against you taking water from Periyar reservoir for our Tamil brothers and sisters to drink , We are not against you producing electricity worth 330 Crores for our Tamil brothers and sisters to have improved quality of lives. We are appealing for our lives . Please try to understand that we did not protest for the last 125 years , and now because of the repeated earthquakes , about 10 lakhs people in Idukki and Kottayam districts do not sleep well , eat well and they see Mullapperyyar dam breaking in front of their eyes in every earthquake occurring near to this dam .
If you are not prepared to consider these requests , I have an appeal to our Tamil brothers and sisters .
‘Please understand that your chief minister has a major psychotic illness , dominated by paranoid delusions against people in Kerala, and she is hearing voices of devil speaking to her asking her to kill 50 lakhs of people and she sees herself dancing over dead bodies. She needs treatment , shock treatment from you people to save our lives . Please….. .Please save us

This is my article published in the ‘THE VIEWSPAPER’

A few days before, I watched on national TV here in South Africa, contestants of the Amazing Race in tears after seeing emaciated people, children and animals crouched around waste heaps dumped in front of dilapidated buildings alongside the street they raced on to Jaipur, Rajastan, India. Amazing Race is seemingly one of the most expensive Reality Contests in the world bringing to the winner team 1 million U.S Dollar price money. I wondered if it was not using India’s third world impoverishment, to tame its first world contestants turning them tender-hearted and if India taking any pride in that? It brings in income, but not definitely to the sufferers. That the slum tourism in Mumbai fetches millions of dollars to the business owners is not a secret. Turning the life of its hell-hole-dwellers into a visual feast for the delicate global viewers, the producers and the artists of the Slum Dog Millionaire clinched many millions and many Oscars.

How true that India is a country of unlimited opportunities!

It is not only in the public places that the filth is stifling neatness and purity. Go to the hotels, bed- and-breakfast establishments and hostels. The story is not very different. Even private homes are no exception. It was a ‘savarna’ (a racial theory that people are different by birth) mandate in India that only people of low birth or the ‘avarnas’ engaged in cleaning and others enjoyed it. So cleaning was never instilled here as a personal habit or a mandatory life-skill. There was always somebody lower, a maid or a worker, to do the cleaning both inside and outside of the household. As a continuum, in the present dispensation, public places are government’s responsibility so that the individuals take no responsibility in the upkeep of them. At homes, it is the responsibility of the females.

In South Africa children irrespective of their gender have chores at homes, schools and hostels. They take pride in their public places by not littering them with waste. Once in the University they are not generally allowed to continue in the hostels after they have turned twenty. By that time they are supposed to cook, make bed, wash plates, dust floor, iron linen and keep the surroundings clean. At homes both men and women do the family chores.

So youngsters in India, forget the old theories and take responsibility for your home chores. Create awareness in yourself and in others on cleanness and take pride in keeping our country neat and clean. If everybody keeps his or her home and yard clean and assist the government to keep the public places clean that can fetch more pride than that in slum tourism.

The main caption in the picture is telling it. ‘Delhi is in rape crisis’.

In a single google search, I have managed these many top news on Delhi rape.

In ‘rape capital’ Delhi, 330 cases in 4 months

Unsafe Capital: 212 rape cases in first five months

Gang leader arrested in Delhi rape case
Delhi govt mulls special courts for rape case

Then you can imagine the ground reality and the feeling of insecurity the Delhi females are swamped with in and outside their homes. The situation is so tyrannical that some of them do not feel safe even within the four walls of their homes.

In her column, though, Priya Ramani asks ‘Who is responsible for Delhi’s rape crisis?’ she does not come out with any conclusive answers, but only more questions. The few things she is conclusive are: the aggravating situation is caused by more and more females occupying Delhi’s public space as the mark of an emerging new India, the new India is eternally in clash with the old India and the transformation in the law and order systems to cope with the modern India is taking place at the snail’s pace. So it is a double insult to the rape victims that they cannot report their victimization to a sensitive Delhi police.

According to Huffpost World ‘every women is allegedly raped in every 18 hours or molested every 14 hours’ in Delhi

What happens in Delhi to some extent is a microcosm of what is happening all over India, or perhaps all over the world, only the level varies. According to a 2006 international rape survey India ranks 90, U.S 10 and South Africa1. And generally all Asian nations rank low which many view is because of poor reports on rape.

Asian nations, in particular India, with their mindset that females are responsible for sexual violence by dressing up provocatively have not yet waken up from the slumber of their traditional restrictive notion that discipline is imposed from outside by powerful agencies like parents, religion and elders through invoking fear. Because the males cannot discipline themselves they confine the females to all kinds of restrictive measures. Hence the practices such as cover up bodies and hide away from men so that they are not heard or seen in public. And I very much doubt whether this is coming truly from the Indian tradition, because India has a tradition in which men and women enjoyed compatible position and status.

However, it is a mistake to presume that it is only the men who are thinking like this, a large number of females too are conditioned to behave exactly in the same way. They need help. Females are mens’ executive agents when it comes to implementing traditional, religious restrictions. Young girls and young women are their targets. In the end of the day it is all jealousy and scramble for power, and wealth.

When the females of the new India question the old authority to pursue a new way of life based on freedom and openness that was denied to their mothers and grandmothers for generations they are considered as enemies of culture and traditions.

In the U.S, or in the west in general, females have gone a long way, to claim their share of public space and to jostle with men in all spheres of life. The Indian women have to go a long way to reach somewhere nearer to that level. The enormity of the issue is evident from the fact that the issue of rape is still not resolved fully in the western world. Their numbers getting raped by their own fathers, brothers, uncles, close relatives and extended family members are only increasing. But they know how to react in one form or the other.

In January, this year in Toronto, Canada a Police Constable Michael Sanguinetti told a personal security at York University that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized. Though the police man apologized for he realized that he supported the stereotypes and the myths about rape that the victims are asking for it, that did not stop walk organiser Sonya Barnett to orgainse a ‘Slut Walk’ to protest against it. She said, by that act the females were claiming the word slut.

The walk triggered similar ‘Slut Walks’ all over the world including America.

No wonder the females in Delhi are bracing to do their ‘Slut Walk’ on 25th June. Scantly clad women, Delhites are going to watch occupying their public space in day light. And probably this is the start. The Indian females who suffer sexual violence including rape in other states may also be inspired by the Delhi ‘Slut Walk’.

The message of the ‘Slut Walk’ may differ from country to country or culture to culture. But to me the most vocal is the one you find in the above poster. ‘Ask me, what I’m asking for’. As a male if you cannot understand her as a person, ask her, what she is and what does she want. She has grown enough to explain it to you. Take the message and move on guys.

Anyone know simple methodes to get an attractive job in Microsoft cooperation? If you dont know then the 14 year Irish teen Hacker will tell you the secret.
Well, there’s the standard method of going to school for computer science, succeeding admirably, creating programs of your own and then applying and hoping you get the nod.

Then there’s the slightly less orthodox method employed occasionally by young and ambitious hackers.

In this case, a 14-year-old Irish hacker managed to break into the online servers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last month and start a phishing scam that tried to get other players to divulge personal information.

The hack came right in the middle of the crippling hack attack that took down the entire Playstation Network, and it scared Microsoft enough to issue worldwide alter for the scam.

So now that the perpetrator has been outed as a 14-year-old geek living with his parents, what’s Microsoft’s response?

Irish Central reports:

Managing Director of Microsoft Ireland Paul] Rellis revealed that Microsoft planned to work with the Dublin teenager to develop his talent for legitimate purposes.

So let that be a lesson, hackers. If you start young enough and hack with enough skill, you can trade “being sued in court” for “getting a sweet job.”

Scientific world is now asking whether tornadoes results due to the climate change, various atudies are going on.A tornado is a rotating column of air that stretches from the bottom of clouds to the Earth’s surface. They can occur in a wide range of shapes and sizes, typically manifesting as a funnel of condensation surrounded by a cloud of dust and debris. Wind speeds in an average tornado reach more than 100mph (160km/h) and the system itself is less than 100 metres across, but extreme events can be several miles across, with wind speeds of more than 300mph.
Grady Dixon, assistant professor of meteorology and climatology at Mississippi State University, told AFP: “If you look at the past 60 years of data, the number of tornadoes is increasing significantly, but it’s agreed upon by the tornado community that it’s not a real increase. It’s having to do with better (weather tracking) technology, more population, the fact that the population is better educated and more aware. So we’re seeing them more often.”
Writing on the Climate Central website, the policy analyst Andrew Freedman said climate change was already changing the environment in which severe thunderstorms and their associated tornadoes form, and that it was bound to have some influence on tornado frequency or strength. “But as of now, no discernible trend has been detected in the observational data, and studies of how tornadoes will fare in a warmer world show somewhat conflicting results.”

The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has clearly said that this year’s very active tornado season in the U.S., although the nation’s deadliest in 60 years, is not linked to climate change and is not a sign that such storms are getting bigger or more frequent.

The severity of the damage and the high number of deaths the tornadoes have caused have to do more with the population density and large number of mobile homes along the tornado routes than with global warming, NOAA research meteorologist Harold Brooks told the AFP news agency Monday.

“Since more moisture gets added to the atmosphere as the climate warms, additional water vapour may help severe thunderstorms and tornadoes to form. On the other hand, wind shear is expected to decline due to climate change, which would argue against an increase in tornado numbers.”

Tornadoes occur every year, and the type of damage they cause depends primarily on where they strike. Urban sprawl and greater population density in some of the areas that regularly experience tornadoes are more what account for the greater number of injuries and deaths today than in the past.

There is also more of a chance today that people will report severe weather events thanks to communication tools such as Twitter, Facebook and the internet generally. Weather centres are monitoring these sources and using them to get a more complete picture of how an event is affecting a specific area, Coulson said.

Coulson said that while Environment Canada is keeping an eye on the situation in the U.S., there is not necessarily any direct link with Canada’s tornado season, which lasts from mid-April until early October.

At this point, all meteorologists can say is that the long-range forecast is calling for above-seasonal temperatures for southern Ontario in June and that warm and humid air masses coming up from the American Deep South could increase the risk of tornadoes.

It is an ideal name, no complaints. Kerala cricket lovers have voted for ths name for their team. This name surely can be identified with the Kerala culture. This name can be called for an elephant with tusks. Elephants are common in Kerala. They can be wild and they can also be domesticated. So the name tusker is apt for the Kerala cricket team.

From Wikipedia
Kochi team management had announced “Indi Commandos Kerala” as the original team name in February 2011. The name and logo received much negative response from the fans worldwide. Things got worse by team management’s further decision to drop “Kerala” from the team name and the reported move to Ahmedabad as the home ground; comparatively high entertainment tax in Kerala (36%) was cited as the reason for the latter. This invoked a mass response in the social networking sites, particularly in Facebook, forcing the management to ultimately change the team name and logo. As a result, a voting poll was setup in the official site and the fans were provided the option the vote between either Kochi or Kerala as the first part of the name and the second part of the name from either of Titans, Tuskers, Tigers, Commandos and United. Tuskers which won this polling was selected as the team name and the full name was released as Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The decision to change the home ground also was dropped by the team management when Corporation of Cochin decided to waive off a 50% in the entertainment tax which now is 18% per game.
